What Is A Tithe?

A tithe is a “tenth part.” The Bible tells us that everything belongs to God (Psalm 24:1, 1 Corinthians 10:26.) In His grace, God allows us to keep, manage, and call our own ninety per cent of our increase, which in modern day terms is our gross income acquired through our physical, intellectual, and economic pursuits. Tithing is returning to God the ten per cent He claims as His own (Lev. 27:30,32.) When we tithe, we give God nothing of our own. It is simply returning to Him that which belongs to Him according to the Scriptures. When we faithfully return God’s tithe to Him, He promises to reward our obedience by opening up the windows of heaven and pouring out bountiful blessings (Malachi 3:8-10.)

What Is An Offering?

An offering is a gift we give to God out of the ninety per cent of our gross income that He has given to us. We give out of a sense of gratitude and thanksgiving (Psalm 66:13) for the priceless gift of salvation (John 3:16), for the great benefits God loads upon us daily (Psalm 68:19), and for the spiritual blessing of sitting in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Eph. 2:6.) We give as responsible citizens of the kingdom of God (Acts 2:45), gladly sharing our blessings for the good of the body and as instruments in God’s economy for meeting the needs of others (Matt. 10:8.) We give in obedience to Christ (Luke 6:38) and as a natural consequence of our faith walk (James 2:20), trusting that God will honor our obedience by supplying all our needs (Phil. 4:19.)
